Toothache in the Middle of the Night in Geneva
What to do when you have a severe toothache at night in Geneva. Emergency options, pain relief tips, and how to get urgent care.
Toothache at night is one of the most common dental emergencies we see at our Geneva clinic. The pain often seems worse at night because you are lying down, increasing blood pressure in the head, and because there are fewer distractions.
The most important thing to do first is manage the pain. Ibuprofen (400-600mg) is effective for dental pain if you can take it safely. Follow package instructions. Paracetamol can also help, or both in alternation.
Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum or tooth - this is a common myth and can actually cause chemical burns to the tissue.
Apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minute intervals. This can reduce inflammation and numb the area.
Try to sleep with your head elevated - this reduces blood pressure in the head and can reduce the throbbing pain.
The following morning, contact us immediately for a same-day appointment. Toothaches rarely resolve on their own - the underlying cause needs treatment.
If the pain is accompanied by facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or the pain is truly unbearable, go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately as these can indicate a spreading infection requiring urgent medical attention.
